This is going to end in tears!
It’s been many moons since I built my first website using Front Page (remember that?) then I moved on to Dreamweaver and I’m not ashamed to say that back then I was terrible; fortunately I wasn’t charging anyone for my services. I was terrible for many years and for many different reasons, mostly because my only client was me. Eventually, I learned how to perfect the web designing process the hard way, through determination, research and lots of mistakes. Today, I think it’s safe to say that I am good at what I do partly because I work with Word Press and Godaddy.
I constantly see people hiring designers who are making the same mistakes that I made when I first started. I am writing this article to help you avoid working with a company that will leave you like my young friend in the video (in tears).
Here are a few ways to tell if the company that you hired is going to leave you in tears.
No hand holding or consultation – We specialize in working with small and medium sized businesses. In most cases this is our client’s first business website so we walk them through the whole process even if they decide to work with another company. Momentum is the energy and excitement that every new website project starts off with. It’s critical to maintain communication throughout the project. The second your web designer loses regular contact with you things start to fall apart. Your web designer should be in contact with you regularly, to keep up the momentum.
No copywriting solution – Creating content for your new website is the biggest challenge you will probably face. It’s also the #1 cause for delays. We can offer you some solutions but ultimately it’s up to you to provide quality content that will represent your company in the best way.
You found them on Gumtree or Craigslist – From my experience, I learned that Gumtree and Craigslist is where cheap people can find other cheap people. Remember your website is your global store front. Invest in a good web designer at an affordable price.
Your web designer is related to you – You should know better than to hire family to work for you, but if you do decide to hire a relative to build your website, they will probably give you a great discount. If they have a web design business that’s great news; however, the bad news is that the project eventually won’t be worth their time, and you will eventually end up getting annoyed that it is taking so long and they are not giving it the attention that you deserve.
They don’t ask enough questions – Your web designer should ask you lots of questions, especially before they start working on your project. They should ask everything about your 3C’s (Company, Competitors, and Clients). Questions should start during the initial sales meetings and kickoff meeting, and then continue throughout the build. No questions is a RED FLAG and a sign that they are probably strapped for cash and are looking to make a quick buck.
I would also strongly advise that you require the designer to build your site on your hosting platform and not a test server. I say this because it gives you more control if the relationship turns sour. I can’t count how many clients have told me that a web designer is trying to squeeze more money out of them by holding their site for ransom.
We work exclusively with Godaddy and even if you don’t want us to build your website we can help you get your hosting and domain name set up at NO COST. You will get 12 months of hosting and a FREE domain name for just $14.
